WordPress Discontinues Twitter API Support

Introduction

WordPress, a widely used website creation platform, has ended its support for the Twitter API amid a sudden price hike. Soon after Elon Musk-owned company announced that it will no longer allow other platforms to share content on Twitter free of cost, a host of tech giants ended their support for this API. WordPress joins a growing list of developers and tech companies, including Microsoft and Intercom, who are parting ways with Twitter.

As a direct consequence of this adjudication, WordPress developers, bloggers, and content creators will no longer be able to share their posts directly with Twitter. However, WordPress users can still manually share their blogs on Twitter.

In a blog post, WordPress admitted that negotiations took place with Twitter regarding this issue, but the parties involved couldn’t reach a resolution. WordPress apologized for the inconvenience and confirmed that users can still connect to other social media sites like Facebook and LinkedIn.

The Twitter API Change

API stands for Application Programming Interface, and its role is to allow different applications to communicate directly with each other. Previously, the Twitter API that let other apps share content to its platform was available to users free of cost. In the recent past, however, Twitter shut down its free API, forcing other applications and websites to pay $42,000 USD per month in order to communicate with the social media giant.

WordPress Connection With Social Media Sites

Jetpack is a WordPress plugin that enables bloggers to share their content on various social media platforms automatically. Given the steep and unprecedented price hike of Twitter API, WordPress has announced that it’s ending Jetpack’s connection to Twitter. From now onwards, WordPress users cannot share their content directly on Twitter.
