The Challenge
The original Bash the Haggis game held significant nostalgic value for its audience, but its outdated technology stack and legacy systems no longer aligned with modern browser environments or current gameplay expectations.
Ropstam encountered several major modernization challenges, including:
Outdated browser compatibility and inconsistent performance
Lack of modern engagement systems, such as progression and competition
No infrastructure for live sponsor content management
Limited replayability for extended promotional campaigns
Need to preserve the recognizable arcade experience while upgrading the underlying technology
The project required a complete technical rebuild while carefully maintaining the nostalgic identity that originally made the game memorable.

The Solution
Ropstam redeveloped Bash the Haggis as a fully modernized Unity WebGL browser game focused on performance, scalability, and user engagement.
While preserving the classic “bash the haggis” gameplay loop, the team introduced modern gameplay enhancements, including real-time leaderboards, responsive controls, power-up mechanics, and dynamic sponsor integrations. Additionally, a remote configuration system was implemented to support live updates to promotional content without requiring game redeployment.
This modernization transformed Bash the Haggis from a static legacy browser game into a scalable promotional gaming platform capable of supporting long-term sponsor campaigns and repeat player engagement across modern devices and browsers.
To achieve the outcome, the following three-faceted approach was followed:

Key Features
Core Gameplay Preservation with Enhanced Responsiveness
The original arcade-style mechanics were rebuilt and optimized using Unity Engine while maintaining the nostalgic gameplay feel. Ropstam improved collision systems, gameplay responsiveness, animation smoothness, and score tracking to deliver a faster and more polished user experience.
Real-Time Leaderboard System
A competitive leaderboard feature was integrated to encourage repeat engagement and improve replayability. Players can compete for high scores, track rankings, and continuously return to improve their performance.
Power-Up Mechanics for Dynamic Gameplay
Interactive power-up systems were introduced to make gameplay more engaging and unpredictable. Features such as temporary boosts, score multipliers, and randomized gameplay modifiers added variety and excitement to the player experience.
Integrated Sponsor Branding System
Sponsor branding elements were seamlessly integrated into the gameplay environment using immersive in-game placements such as signboards and environmental visuals. This enabled sponsor visibility without disrupting gameplay immersion.
Remote Configuration & Live Content Updates
Ropstam implemented a remote configuration system that enables live updates to sponsor assets, promotional visuals, and selected gameplay content without requiring a fresh deployment. This significantly improved long-term campaign scalability and operational flexibility.
Cross-Browser & Performance Optimization
The game was optimized for stable execution across modern desktop and mobile browsers. Improvements to asset management, memory handling, and WebGL rendering performance resulted in faster loading times, stable frame rates, and smoother gameplay experiences.
